In this very competitive market of Pharmaceutical trading, Muthu Group started with a humble beginning as a retail outlet named “Sangam Pharmacy”, in the year 1970 at Perambur in Chennai. The promoter, Mr E Gnanam had his eyes clearly focused into the future and ensured that this retail outlet served the customer in the best possible way. With Service being the motto, this single retail outlet grew and has become Fifty as of now. The group is very positive that the numbers will keep on increasing, and has ensured that the motto “Service” would not be compromised.
With the established name in the field of retailing, Muthu Group ventured into the second aspect of Pharmaceutical Trading namely Wholesale Distribution and at the moment has six such outlets.
With a view to serve the Pharmaceutical Industry, Hospitals and the general public, Muthu Group ventured into opening 24 Hrs retail outlets at Purasawakkam , Perambur and Egmore which proved to be a success.
With their philanthropic nature Muthu Group has conducted more than 100 camps staring from way back as 1972, in different parts of Tamilnadu. Free consultation and distribution of medicines are being done in these camps as a result lakhs of people have benefited. Muthu Group’s only aim is that this facility should reach all over Tamilnadu especially to rural areas. Many doctors and prominent people from all walks of life have presided over these functions and wide publicity has been given to these camps in many leading newspapers.
The achievements, progress and phenomenal growth of Muthu Group have been published in Business India March 2004 issue which is a feather in their cap.
The success story of the Managing Director, Mr E Gnanam, can be traced back to history. He comes from the trading community of Nattukottai Chettiars. His entry into the field of business was Fourty years ago, when he moved from a small village in Pudukottai District to Chennai. He started his career as an employee in Lena Pharmacy at Chennai and soon developed a liking to the Pharmaceutical Retailing Business. With the experience he had gained, he started his own pharmacy at Perambur in the year 1970, which was named “Sangam Pharmacy”. From that venture onwards Mr E Gnanam’s personal experience in business has been adventurous. His ambitious thinking and willingness to promote new ideas has improved the Pharmaceutical industry in general. His major contribution was seen when he accepted the post of Zonal Secretary and General Secretary of Tamilnadu Chemists and Druggists Association from the year 1992. He relinquished this office in September 1998. During this period he had introduced various measures, which benefited the Pharmaceutical Association. He was also the Joint Secretary of the All India Organisation of Chemists & Druggist and also was the Convener for South Zone – AIOCD.
To add to this profile Mr E Gnanam is currently holding the prestigious post as Chairman of Pappiamma Raman’s Abandoned Child Home, which was an unanimous decision taken by the Governing Board consisting of prominent personalities and top Government officials. Smt. Pappiamma the wife of Shri K R Narayanan, former President of India started this Institution in 1992.
After taking over as Chairman he has brought about many changes and has been responsible for improving the financial position of the Institution. He has organised shows and collected donations from industrialists, general public, not to mention his personal contribution, all of which has been instrumental in having a new building for the Institution.
Adding to his never ending service he has recently built a Marriage Hall in his native village. This hall is let out free of cost to the poor and needy to conduct marriages, meetings, and other functions.
Not satisfied to rest with the laurels he has achieved during this time, Mr E Gnanam has set new goals for the future, which he is sure will be fulfilled.
